What is "bioenergy"?
- Biofuels, such as ethanol made from corn and biodiesel made from palm oil, are a growing but controversial energy source.
- Biomass, such as wood and other solid biofuels, has been burned since ancient times for cooking and heating – and more recently to generate electricity.
- Other technologies use waste products such as sewage or manure to create biogas.
While some have called for an end to biofuel use due to environmental and social concerns, others (including governments and corporations) see great potential – for meeting energy needs, helping the climate and boosting rural incomes.
How can I learn more?
- Use this wiki to explore what is happening with biofuels, and what the future may bring.
- Because this is a user-edited "wiki" website, you are invited and encouraged to add your knowledge and comments and give feedback on draft principles for biofuel sustainability.
