Whey, also known as milk plasma, is a by-product from cheese or casein production. It is the liquid remaining after cheese has been curdled and strained. Whey is being considered as an ethanol feedstock.
Issues
- Although it can be used as food product or additive, the large quantities of whey produced during cheese production create a real disposal problem.[1]
- As much as 50% of whey produced is disposed off as sewage.[1]
- Converting this waste stream to ethanol could help eliminate substantial quantities of agricultural waste.
