Wood ash utilization
Academics and reality sometimes radically diverge. The case that needs serious consideration is wood ash from power plants being developed in the southeast. How must we address this potentially valuable resource? The pH of wood ash is too high for safe direct application to crops but if it were to be bulked with a carbon-rich material like composted wood as sawdust or another wood by-product, it could be used in sandy soils for legume crops like our own perennial peanut. The NRCS is in favor of this approach in FL where 3 large wood-fired biomass plants (100 MW each) are on the drawing boards. Cation exchange capacities of our sandy soils is abysmal. Carbon sequestration in soils via long rotations of woody species can be increased from the very high rate they are at now.
