News
- Summary of EU policy making on agrofuels.. The discussion paper “Paving the way for agrofuels. EU policy, sustainability criteria an climate calculations” "provides an account of current EU and EU member state efforts to develop `sustainability´ standards in order to justify the massive government support for agrofuels and biomass for energy."
- The second version of Draft Principles from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels is available!. The first round of discussions has ended up with the current version, in which some points are still debated, although this wording received a broad support in the working groups and among the [RSB Steering board|Steering Board] members.
- Ceres raises $75 million to develop dedicated energy crops. According to Biopact, the money was raised by a private offering of convertible preferred stock. Ceres plans to use the proceeds for research and product development activities in several dedicated energy crops.
- Fortis bank buys 13.1 Million worth of carbon credits from biogas project in Brazil at first internet auction. According to Biopact, 27 September 2007, The credits were issued by the Bandeirantes sanitary landfill, where methane gases are collected by private company Biogás Energia Ambiental and used to generate electric energy.
- Jane Goodall says biofuel crops hurt rain forests. According to Reuters, 26 September 2007, "Primate scientist Jane Goodall said on Wednesday the race to grow crops for vehicle fuels is damaging rain forests in Asia, Africa and South America and adding to the emissions blamed for global warming."
- Goodall is further quoted as saying, "We're cutting down forests now to grow sugarcane and palm oil for biofuels and our forests are being hacked into by so many interests that it makes them more and more important to save now....Biofuel isn't the answer to everything; it depends where it comes from."
- Palm price may fall if US stop subsidies (Reuters). "Global palm oil prices, which have been on the boil for the last couple of months, could ease from January if the United States cuts incentives it gives to biofuel producers, a leading analyst said."
- New plastic-based carbon capturing membrane developed using nanotechnology. According to Biopact, this membrane is an effective, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly way to capture the waste carbon dioxide produced when biofuels are burned.
- Canadian government invests $500 million in next generation biofuels. According to Biopact, the money will go to jumpstart the production of next generation biofuels in Canada.
- Virgin to use biofuel powered airplanes by the end of 2008!. According to Reuters UK, Virgin plans to favor 2-engined jets for the future, with a decreased fuel consumption (27% in the case of the new Boeing 787).
