SOC Draft Principles

Original Principles on Social Issues
1. Biomass production should comply with all local and national laws, including labor laws and recognizing land and water rights. If such legislation does not exist, international norms shall be the reference.
8. Biomass production should contribute to the well-being of communities, workers and rural populations.
9. Biomass production should not contribute to food insecurity.
New Proposal from the RSB secretariat
After discussions and virtual meetings within the Working Group on Social Impacts, the RSB secretariat has compiled all the comments and suggestions from the participants (to download the synthesis of all the edits and new proposal, please click here.
The proposed new draft principles are:
1. Biofuel production should comply with all local and national laws, including labor laws and biofuel production should respect land and water rights. If such legislation does not exist, international norms shall be the reference.
8. Biofuel production should not violate fundamental human or labor rights, and should ensure worker well-being.
9. Biofuel production should, directly and indirectly, contribute to the social and economic development of producer communities and rural populations.
10. Biofuel production should not directly or indirectly contribute to food insecurity.
The principle on biotechnology “The use of biotechnologies for biofuel production should improve the biofuels' social and/or environmental performance, and always be consistent with national or international biosafety protocols.”, as formulated in the environment section, will require the two groups to work jointly on this aspect.
