This discipline is connected to toxicology and ecotoxicology, and aims to forecast the likeliness of a hazard to happen, by analysing the level of risk related. Hazards can be of several kinds, but the two main ones are the risk of substances to be detrimental upon ecosystems and/or upon human health. The risk ratio (RR) is calculated by dividing the Predicted Environmental Concentration of the substance of concern (PEC) by the Predicted No-Effect Concentration. The latter is calculated after Ecotoxicology testing and includes a safety margin. Below this level of concentration, there is no risk upon Humans or living organisms. If the PEC is above the PNEC and thus the Risk Ratio superior to 1, a risk does exist that the substance will impact some organisms or human beings.
