This page is designed to catalogue case studies related to biofuels and land use change developed primarily in response to the November 2008 São Paulo, Brazil conference organized by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels.
Background: Changes in the demand for biofuels and their feedstocks can lead to changes in the prices of land, agricultural commodities and other factors that may lead to secondary changes on the ground, such as expansion of land planted in certain crops or felling of forests to create new agricultural land. These changes in land use may in turn lead to increased demand for water, increased applications of fertilizers or pesticides, increased emissions of greenhouse gases, etc.
- For more general background information on the issue, see the BioenergyWiki page "Indirect land use impacts of biofuels".
