The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) "helps developing countries fund projects and programs that protect the global environment" in the areas of "biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants."[1]

GEF projects on climate change include projects on:
- Renewable Energies
- Energy Efficiency
- Sustainable Transportation
- Adaptation
- New Low-GHG Energy Technologies
- Enabling Activities, National Communications and other obligations under the UNFCCC
Bioenergy activities
- GEF is working with BESCOM and Koratgere village in Karnataka state, India, to support electricity generation utilizing biomass gasifier units totaling 500 kW.[2]
