This page is specially dedicated to the discussion on the draft principles (Environment) for the members of the Working Group on Environment (Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels). To comment the new draft principles and see Questions/Answers from the WG members, please visit the Discussion Page

Original Principles on Environment

3. Biomass production should not lead to the destruction or damaging of areas of high biodiversity.
4. Biomass production should not degrade or damage soils.
5. Biomass production should not contaminate or deplete water resources.
6. Biomass production should not lead to air pollution.
7. The use of GMOs for biofuel production should be made transparent, so that buyers can make their own decisions.

New Proposal from the RSB secretariat

After discussions and virtual meetings within the Working Group on Environment, the RSB secretariat has compiled all the comments and suggestions from the participants (to download the synthesis of all the edits, please click here) and reformulated the draft principles (to download the new draft principles with comments, please click here).

The proposed new draft principles are:
3. Biofuel production should not directly or indirectly endanger wildlife species or areas of high conservation value.
4. Biofuel production should not directly or indirectly degrade or damage soils.
5. Biofuel production should not directly or indirectly contaminate or deplete water resources.
6. Biofuel production should not directly or indirectly lead to air pollution.
7. The use of biotechnologies for biofuel production should improve their social and/or environmental performance, and always be consistent with national or international biosafety protocols.
