• Biofuels eat into China's food stocks - 21 December 2006 from Asia Times Online. China has clamped down on the use of corn and other edible grains for producing biofuels due to concerns that it will impact on food security.

• China looks at BioOil technology to reduce oil imports 13 December 2006 from Biofuel Review. "China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has come out in favor of the introduction of Dynamotive's BioOil technology, which uses agricultural and forestry wastes."
• Grain for food takes priority over biofuel 12 December 2006 from the China Daily. China's vice-minister of finance, has said that biofuels "must only be developed on the basis of guaranteeing China's food supplies first". Instead, the use of non-grain agricultural and forestry plants will be encouraged.
• EERC awarded $5 Million contract for the advancement of tactical biofuels 11 December 2006, from Biofuelreview.com. The U. of North Dakota's Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) has been awarded approximately $5 million from the U.S. Department of Defense(DoD's) to develop and demonstrate a new military bio-jet fuel.
• Nissan Announce Green Program 2010 includes Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV) 11 December 2006 from Greencarcongress.com. In addition to ambitious plans to introduce plug-in hybrids, Nissan will release several E85 Flex fuel vehicles (FFV) in the US and is planning a 100% ethanol (E100) car for Brazil in 2009
• US Congress Extends Ethanol Tariff to 2009 11 December 2006 from Greencarcongress.com. Both Houses of Congress voted to extend the 54 cent tariff on imported ethanol until January 1, 2009. President Bush is expected to sign the measure.
• S. Africa to develop biofuel 8 December 2006, from the People's Daily. South Africa's Cabinet has approved a draft industrial strategy for biofuels, using excess crop production and expanding the use of underutilized arable land to contribute up to 75 percent of renewable energy by 2013.
• Mixed Prairie Grasses Better Source of Biofuel Than Corn Ethanol and Soybean Biodiesel 7 December 2006 press release from the US National Science Foundation. A new study shows that mixtures of native perennial grasses provide more usable energy per acre than corn grain ethanol or soybean biodiesel, are better for the environment, and are carbon-negative.

• Biofuel can cause crude oil slump to $40 in ’07: expert 7 December 2006 from the Gulf Times Crude oil prices in New York may tumble to $40 a barrel next year as demand for biofuel spurs investors to switch from energy to agricultural commodities, said the chief commodities strategist at Japan’s Mitsui Bussan Futures Ltd.

"A Kuala Lumpur-based company, in coordination with local authorities and the state government, is going to utilize nipah, which has a much higher yield per hectare than corn, sugar beets or sugarcane, as a feedstock for commercial ethanol production.
• Biofuels to Be Made in Volgograd 4 December 2006 from the Siberian Financial Information Service. A project to build a plant with a projected capacity of 301,000 tons/yr using up to a million tons/yr of fodder wheat as a feedstock in Volgograd is being planned by a S. Korean company.
• Betting fortunes in the Philippines on biofuel boom 4 December 2006 from the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Chemrez Technologies Inc. has shifted its focus to the production of biodiesel from coconut oil, which can increase fuel efficiency.
• Indonesian power plants start using biofuel to cut costs 2 December 2006 from Xinhua News Agency. Indonesia's state-owned power firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will start using biofuel, pure plant oil (ppo) from oil palm and other feedstocks, to fire 114 small- and medium-scale power plants around the country beginning next year. The 80-20 PPO/diesel mix, was expected to be cheaper per kilowatt per hour than power produced from oil-based fuels.
• Bio-Fuels Seen as Alternative to Rising Oil Prices in Developing Countries 2 December 2006 from Voice of America News. Experts attending a UNCTAD conference on biofuels say alternative sources of energy could counter the rising price of fossil fuels, which is especially burdensome for developing nations. There are also downsides to producing biofuels including the risk that land use for energy crops may be done at the expense of food, the use of scarce water resources and reductions in bio-diversity.
• Biofuel increasing China's corn imports 1 December 2006 from Interfax China. China could become a net corn importer in a few years as a result of strong demand from ethanol production.
• West Java, Indonesia Farmers to Produce Cassava for Ethanol 1 December 2006, from biopact. Farmers will cooperate with South Korean firm LBL Network Co Ltd and be assisted by the West-Java provincial authorities. Subang, Indramayu, Sumedang and Kuningan district will make 50,000 hectares of land available to grow cassava, in exchange for a beneficial supply contract.
