"A Carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide."[1]

A Carbon Footprint is the sum of two measurements, the "primary footprint" and the "secondary footprint".

  1. "The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation (e.g. car and plane)."[1]
  2. "The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use - those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown."[1]
  • The total greenhouse gas contribution of a person, organization, product or service is often referred to as their carbon footprint.
  • A broader measure of the impact imposed on the environment by a person, organization or national economy is their ecological footprint, which usually includes the carbon footprint, but in another sense of the term and measured in land area instead of tonnes of carbon dioxide.[2]
