Biogas, which can be produced from a range of waste products and feedstocks in low-technology anaerobic digesters has great potential for rural development. Biogas can be used for cooking gas, electricity production or as a fuel for machines or vehicles.

- The Haebowal Complex project of GE corporation in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. This project utilizes biogas from cattle waste methane from dairies in the area. The 1MW "Biomethanation" plant at Haebowal utilizes some "235 tons of this manure to produce 20,000 - 22,000 kWh/day, ensuring the plant will always have a fresh supply of fuel."[1]
- In a "digester anaerobic fermentation yields the biogas fuel (60-70 percent methane 30-40 percent CO2) which is then stored in the gas holder to be burned;" the byproduct is a "nearly odorless, high in nutrients and a rich fertilizer that is sold to local farmers."
- As stated on the GE website, the "implementation of biogas as a power source throughout India represents an inexpensive, renewable and relatively clean source of energy in a country committed to providing electricity to even the most remote of its populations."[2]

- Tanzanian coffee farmers convert waste water into biogas, 23 April 2007, from the BBC. A bio-gas converter is being tested in Tanzania. The machine that washes and prepares the green beans produces streams of highly acidic wastewater. This water can be fed into an anaerobic digester and converted into biogas. which is used instead of diesel to power the machines.
