- Sugar accounts for 60% of Belize's agricultural exports. The principal crop is sugar cane, which is used for sugar production and as a feedstock for ethanol production. This could make Belize an important exporter of biofuels.

- Northern Belize to benefit economically when ethanol production facility opens. 8 November, 2007, Merconsult S.A. from Panama, and Destillint SA de CV from Mexico have joined forces to produce ethanol in Belize at the Libertad Sugar Factory.
- Blue Diamond Ventures announced plans to build a biodiesel plant in Belize. 16 March, 2007. The venture is a partnership with Texas A&M University.
