International research organizations and initiatives
- ICRISAT (Hyderabad, India) - The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics. Conducts research on plants, including biofuel feedstocks such as sweet sorghum.
- The Refuel Project - The Refuel Project "is designed to encourage a greater market penetration of biofuels" in the European Union.
National research organizations and initiatives
Research at academic institutions
- China
- Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) - A comprehensive bioenergy and bioprocess research institute of the Chineses Academy of Sciences. The institute is focusing on the R&D of biomass resources, biocatalysts and green chemicals, bioprocesses, biofuels, bio-based materials and products, and energy strategy and assessment.
- Haiti
- The CHIBAS foundation - A non-profit organization working to develop and promote the use of multipurpose crops contributing to food and energy security in Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic. The foundation runs a Biofuel Technical & Knowledge Center working on Sweet sorghum and Jatropha curcas (research: plant breeding and agronomy)
- Switzerland
- Empa Swiss Federal Materials Testing, St. Gallen (EMPA)
- Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) - The EPFL Energy Center hosts the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels, a key multi-stakeholder initiative to develop standards for the sustainability of biofuels. See the RSB webpage.
- United States
- The California Biomass Collaborative - "a statewide collaboration of government, industry, environmental groups, and educational institutions administered for the state by the University of California, Davis"
- Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) - a collaborative effort of the University of California, Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, funded through a $500 million 10-year grant from the energy company BP. The Insitute is to be located on the U.C. Berkeley campus.
- This institute was opposed by the organization Stop BP-Berkeley.
- Sun Grant Initiative
- Brazil
- [http://www.reporterbrasil.org.br/biofuel/ Biofuel Watch Center (ONG Reporter Brasil) - A non-governamental organization working to research, analyze and turn public in report form and through journalistic stories the social, environmental aspects and impacts, alongside land, labor and traditional communities issues related to crops that are potentially useful or already being used as raw material to the production of agrofuels in Brazil. They are: sugarcane, soy, palms, corn, cotton (seed), castor bean and jatropha.
Research consortiums
- The Glycerol Challenge - The Glycerol Challenge is a consortium of industry and Cardiff University funded by the UK Department of Transportation to develop alternative uses for glycerol, a major by-product of biodiesel production.
