In addition to existing national (federal government) targets for production of biofuels and alternative energy, some U.S. presidential candidates have proposed ambitious targets. Such targets may be seen as related to campaign strategies to win support from farmers, rural communities and others in agricultural states, such as Iowa (host of an early presidential caucus) and Illinois.

  • Alice in ethanol land - 21 March 2007 from Grist.org: "Former Senator John Edwards (D-N.C.)...has just published his latest energy plan. One important plank of that plan foresees the nation producing (not just consuming, which would allow for imports) 65 billion gallons a year of ethanol by 2025.
    • According to this article, the target proposed by Senator Barack Obama is for 60 billion gallons by 2030.
    • The article notes, however, that such a high level of ethanol production may significanly impact the national treasury. "If the 51 cents a gallon volumetric ethanol excise tax credit (VEETC) is extended beyond the end of 2010 -- as most commentators and even the USDA expect will happen...the cumulative cost to the U.S. Treasury would be from 2007 through 2025, assuming straight-line growth: Almost $350 billion (=$0.51 x 19 x [7+(65-7)/2]).
