- China and India face water risk from biofuels - A paper by researchers from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), "Biofuels and implications for agricultural water use: blue impacts of green energy" (PDF file), predicts food and water shortages in China and India associated with increased production of biofuels.
- California Energy Commission Adopts State Alternative Fuels Plan. California state energy regulators have approved plan that could see biofuels displace 26% of petrol and diesel used in California by 2022 and more than 50% by 2050.
- INFORSE Europe calls for moratorium on support of agrofuels. INFORSE Europe agreed a moratorium on incentives in EU Countires for agrofuels from large-scale monocultures in order to provide time to study in depth the consequences of large-scale agrofuel production.
- Syngenta starts research partnership with the Queensland University of Technology. Syngenta has agreed a research partnership in Australia for the cost effective conversion of sugarcane biomass to biofuels.
- Ethanol blending: Sugar industry in South India optimistic (Business Line). Madatory ethanol blendig programme offers an assured and higher income.
- Increase in Grain Prices Affects U.S. Food Donations (ENN)."From Illinois corn to Kansas wheat, U.S. grain crops are experiencing their fastest price hike since 1990."
- European biodiesel board threatens legal action against US biodiesel subsidies. According to Biopact, the board claims that a sharp increase in exports of biodiesel from the United States to Europe can only be explained by unfair practices that they may challenge in front of the WTO.
- Uganda to get gelfuel and ethanol plant. According to Biopact, a local investor plans to set up the plant, which will make gelfuels and ethanol from cassava and sugarcane waste products.
- Mozambique signs ethanol mega-deal: $510 million, 30,000 hectares of sugarcane According to Biopact, Mozambique's Agricultural Minister has confirmed the deal with Central African Mining & Exploration Company Plc to build a plantation and ethanol plant.
- Brazil sugarcane mills agree to end burning by 2017 (Reuters)."Almost 100 sugar and ethanol mills in Brazil's main sugar cane state Sao Paulo have agreed to stop the practice of burning cane fields by 2017, the Sugar Cane Industry Union (Unica) said on Monday."
- Brazilian president calls on Africa to join biofuels revolution. According to Biopact, the president called for Africa to ensure its energy independence and economic growth through taking advantage of the biofuels market."
- Genencor launches first ever commercial enzyme for cellulose ethanol. "Genencor, a division of Danish company Danisco A/S, announced the launch of Accellerase 1000, the first ever commercially available biomass enzyme developed specifically for second generation biorefineries. "
- Tropical maize could become biofuel supercrop in the US, similar to sugarcane. "Scientists from the University of Illinois who are studying tropical maize have found that when the crop is grown in the US, it does not produce grain, but stores far more sugar in its stalks instead."
- UN rapporteur calls for biofuel moratorium (Swissinfo). "The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food is demanding an international five-year ban on producing biofuels to combat soaring food prices."
- Green fuels will save the earth -- or maybe not (Reuters). "The earth is too small to accommodate all the biofuel projects envisioned for the globe, and this raises doubts whether green fuels will ever play a big role in weaning the world off crude oil", Nao Nakanishi said.
- Ethanol investment faces bumpy ride (Reuters). "Investment opportunities in green fuel ethanol are clouded by falling prices, rising costs and excess capacity, but prospects will improve on expectations for high oil prices, consultant Jonathan Kingsman said on Thursday."
