Principle 10

Biofuel production shall promote practices that seek to improve soil health and minimize degradation.

Criterion 10.a

Air pollution from agrochemicals, biofuel processing units, and machinery shall be minimized.

The use of ground or aerial pesticides must comply with the FAO’s codes of conduct.

Criterion 10.b

Open-air burning shall be avoided in biofuel production.

Key Guidance, as included in Version Zero

Open-air burning of leaves, straw and other agricultural residues must be minimized, with the aim of ultimately eliminating burning practices. In specific situations such as those described in the ASEAN guidelines and other appropriate policies, or if workers’ health and safety is at stake, limited open-air burning practices may occur.
